Omar Helmy Abdelmegid, M.D., (“Dr. Helmy") is an ophthalmologist who treats cataracts, glaucoma, macular degenerations, diabetic retinopathy, pterygiums and dry eyes, and also cares for those who need glasses or contact lenses. His passion for lifelong learning and keeping up-to-date on the latest technology is inspired by his dedication to providing the best care possible to each of his patients.

“I've always wanted to make a difference in the world, and as an ophthalmologist we often hear patients tell us they would do anything to preserve their eyesight," Dr. Helmy said. “The most gratifying experiences come when patients are overwhelmed with joy because of life-changing care that restores their vision."

With several of his family members in ophthalmology, Dr. Helmy was inspired early on by the tremendous improvements in quality of life their patients achieved, particularly from corneal grafting. While providing substantive improvements in vision through surgery is a favorite part of his practice, Dr. Helmy values the patient-doctor connection that is created during consultation.

“I believe in active listening and building trust with empathy and emotional support," Dr. Helmy A. said. “It's important for patients to feel empowered and take an active role in their health, and my goal is to provide them with information that's clear and allows them to make the best possible decisions about their care."

Dr. Helmy earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt and his Doctor of Medicine through Educational Commission Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) Certification. He served his ophthalmology residency at UMass Memorial Eye Center in Worcester, Mass.

In his free time, Dr. Helmy enjoys connecting with friends and having deep conversations, going on spontaneous adventures, and creating memories with those who make life meaningful. He's a passionate explorer and enjoys traveling.
