What is blastomycosis?
Blastomycosis—often called “blasto”—is a fungal infection that starts in the lungs after someone breathes in spores from disturbed soil or decaying vegetation. It can feel like a stubborn lung infection, and getting care early can help you recover sooner.
Who is at risk?
You may be at higher risk of exposure if you spend time in environments where the fungus is common. This includes activities like:
- Farming or landscaping
- Camping or hiking
- Working with soil, wood, or decaying vegetation
People with weakened immune systems may experience more severe illness.
Symptoms
Blastomycosis symptoms can be mild at first and may mimic a cold or pneumonia. Common signs include:
- Dry cough (sometimes with chest discomfort)
- Fever or pneumonialike illness
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue, weight loss, or body aches
- Occasionally skin sores or joint pain in more advanced cases
If symptoms aren’t improving—or you recently spent time around disturbed soil—our pulmonary experts can help you find answers.
Diagnosis
Your care team may use:
- Sputum testing
- Cultures
- Imaging (such as Xray or CT)
These tests help confirm the diagnosis and guide your treatment plan.

Treatment
Most cases are treated with oral antifungal medication taken over several months. Your care team will monitor your progress closely to be sure the infection is improving and not spreading beyond the lungs.
