Dr. Darren P. Corteen, an orthopedic surgeon, specializes in sports medicine focusing on knee and shoulder injuries. He treats work-related injuries.

Dr. Corteen’s early interest in sports led him
to pursue his specialty of sports medicine,
a subspecialty of orthopedics. Although
most of his patients are athletes, he also sees
many people whose injuries are work-related.

“I treat knee and shoulder injuries primarily,
and I have a special interest in cartilage
injuries,” he said. He is one of the only
orthopedic surgeons in the Marshfield
Clinic Health System who performs arthroscopic
surgery of the hip. These procedures are a
consideration for a relatively small number
of patients and can be complicated
because they sometimes involve modifying
the alignment of bones to change how the
patient carries weight.

Dr. Corteen earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health in Madison. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Wayne State University Hospitals in Detroit, and a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison. He chose to come to Marshfield Clinic primarily because he and his wife are both natives of Wisconsin.
