Neuropsychologist Dr. Gary Olsen specializes in helping children who are experiencing neurocognitive difficulties, as well as conditions, such as traumatic brain injury.
Among the conditions he treats are those related to developmental disorders, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, autism and learning disorders.
“I was always interested in working with children,” Dr. Olsen said. “While completing my studies in college, I appreciated how psychologists worked with children to diagnose their conditions and determine next steps.”
Dr. Olsen considers his care for children to be a family effort. “A child does not live in isolation,” he said. “A serious medical condition has an impact on relationships throughout the family. In addition to treating the physical and psychological needs of the patient, part of our job is to address the emotional needs of the entire family.”
Dr. Olsen earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He completed his internship in psychology, with a specialty in neuropsychology, at the University of Florida Health Science Center, Gainesville; and a fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at the University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor.
Since coming to Marshfield Clinic, Dr. Olsen has helped to develop a system-wide comprehensive treatment plan for student athletes who have sustained a concussion. This included the creation of an informational video for distribution to high schools.
Dr. Olsen, his wife, Melissa, and their pets reside in Marshfield. They enjoy spending time with their family and friends.
