Conditions we diagnose and treat

  • Plantar fasciitis: An overuse injury of the foot’s fascia causing heel pain — often worse with first steps in the morning. Treatment may include activity changes, stretches, footwear/orthotics, anti-inflammatories, and targeted therapies.
  • Achilles tendonitis: Irritation from increased training or repetitive strain; common in runners and athletes. We focus on pain relief, gradual loading, flexibility, and return-to-sport planning.
  • Bunions: A bony bump at the base of the big toe that can lead to pain and shoe wear challenges. Options range from footwear changes to surgical correction when needed.
  • Hammertoes: Toe deformity causing discomfort and calluses; managed with shoe modifications, padding, splints, or surgery when severe.
  • Metatarsalgia: Inflammation at the ball of the foot — sharp or shooting pain, often with impact sports; treated with load management and cushioning.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bacterial infection of bone, most often in the feet; symptoms include pain, swelling, and redness. Prompt evaluation is essential.
  • Diabetes-related foot issues: Loss of sensation increases risk of wounds and infections. Routine checks, protective footwear, and early care help prevent complications.
  • Ankle arthritis & ankle replacement: For severe arthritis, ankle replacement can relieve pain and improve motion. Expect a thorough evaluation to determine the best approach for you.

When to see a podiatrist

  • Pain that limits daily activity (walking, standing, exercising).
  • Swelling, redness, or warmth in the foot or ankle.
  • Numbness, tingling, or wounds that won’t heal — especially if you have diabetes.
  • Changes in foot shape (bunions, hammertoes) or stiffness from arthritis.
If any of the above describe you, schedule an appointment and tell us how the pain began and what makes it better or worse. (Our team will guide you if urgent care is the safer first step.)

Frequently asked questions

What conditions do Marshfield Clinic podiatrists treat?

Common issues include Achilles tendonitis, bunions, hammertoes, heel pain, metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, osteomyelitis, diabetes-related foot problems, arthritis of the ankle (including ankle replacement).

Do I need a referral?

Referrals depend on your insurance plan. If you’re unsure, schedule an appointment and our team can help you navigate next steps.

How do I prepare for my visit?

Bring a list of symptoms and when they occur, your shoes/inserts, medication list, and any prior imaging.

Will I need surgery?

Many problems improve with conservative care (orthotics, therapy, activity modification). If surgery is the best option, we’ll outline the procedure, recovery, and follow-up in detail — including reconstructive foot/ankle surgery or ankle replacement when appropriate.
