Martin Reriani, MD

As a critical care specialist, Martin Reriani,
M.D., spends all of his time treating critically
ill hospital patients.

“I worked in a critical care center in Nairobi,
Kenya, and really enjoyed working with
very sick patients but I had no formal
training,” he said. He has since completed
fellowship training in critical care medicine
as well as internal medicine at Mayo School
of Graduate Medical Education. He also
recently became an assistant professor at
Mayo, where he is still completing research.

Critical care medicine can be draining but also rewarding, he said. “You see people come in who are intubated and close to dying, and you see them get better. Sometimes they come back just to say thank you.” Most of his contact is with family members, since the patients are often too ill to communicate, most often with respiratory failure and/or sepsis.

Dr. Reriani earned his medical degree in his home country of Kenya and completed an internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago before undertaking his advanced training at Mayo.

He is married to Rosemary Nwoko, M.D., a nephrologist at Marshfield Clinic. He enjoys playing soccer, traveling and trying different cuisines, and he also considers research a hobby. He and Dr. Nwoko have a son, Gabriel.
