Why cardiac rehab matters

Cardiac rehab is more than exercise. It’s a comprehensive program designed to:

  • Improve your ability to perform daily activities
  • Reduce heart disease risk factors
  • Boost your quality of life
  • Increase your knowledge of your condition and how to manage it

Who benefits from cardiac rehab?

You may benefit if you’ve experienced:

  • Heart attack
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Angioplasty or stent procedure
  • Bypass surgery
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Heart transplant
  • Cardiomyopathy

What to expect in your program

Our cardiac rehab program typically lasts 12 weeks, with sessions three times per week. Each visit includes:

  • Supervised cardiovascular and strength exercises tailored to your abilities
  • Blood pressure and heart rate monitoring for safety
  • Education classes to identify and reduce cardiac risk factors
  • Home exercise guidelines for long-term success
  • Nutrition counseling (except at Dickinson, where staff provide education instead)
  • Health screenings and progress reports sent to your cardiologist or primary care provider
  • At the end of the program, you’ll have better overall fitness and the tools to exercise safely on your own.
