Dr. Omesh Toolsie, pulmonologist, treats pulmonary concerns, like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, lung nodules, shortness of breath and general respiratory concerns.

For Dr. Omesh Toolsie, health care and pulmonology have proven to be perfect fits.

“I enjoy the personal connections I get to make with patients and love my specialty in particular," Dr. Toolsie said. “It's a procedure-heavy specialty, but you also get to do outpatient care. There's a great balance between being in the quick of things in the ICU, but you can still slow down to see patients in the clinic."

Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, a British Commonwealth island located off the coast of South America, Dr. Toolsie's interest was in civil engineering. But, his college courses in biology and biochemistry, along with a passion of meeting with and talking to people, drew him to medicine.

Dr. Toolsie received his medical degree from University of the West Indies – St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago. He completed an internship at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Trinidad and Tobago. He is fellowship trained in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and sleep medicine.

As a pulmonologist, he sees and treats patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He sees patients for pulmonary care including asthma treatment and care, benign and malignant nodules, smoking cessation assistance, pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer and bronchiectasis. He performs procedures like the EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) bronchoscopy.

He strives to get a comprehensive history with each patient, and wants to be honest and upfront with what he finds.

“It's important to have a fresh, holistic approach with every patient I see, otherwise you may miss the iceberg that's under the surface," he said. “I also want my patients involved in decision making."

Outside of healthcare, Dr. Toolsie enjoys jogging, cooking and spending time with his family – his wife and son.
