Broken Bones & Fracture Care

Expert care to help you heal and move again

Bones are strong, but when a force is too great, they can crack or break—a condition called a fracture. In severe cases, the bone may pierce the skin, creating an open fracture that requires urgent care.

At Marshfield Clinic, our orthopedic specialists are trained to treat fractures caused by traumatic injuries, falls, or accidents. We provide personalized care to restore function and reduce pain—so you can get back to living your life.

  • Hip fractures

Treatments options for broken bones

Your treatment plan depends on the severity of the break, the bone involved, and whether the fracture is open or closed.

Casting
A plaster or fiberglass cast holds repositioned bones in place while they heal.

  • Functional cast or brace: Stabilizes the bone while allowing limited joint movement.

Traction
A gentle pulling force applied through skin tapes or a metal pin realigns bones over time.

Surgery

  • Open Reduction: The surgeon repositions bones and secures them with screws, plates, or rods.
  • External Fixation: Pins and screws above and below the fracture connect to external bars for stability until healing is complete.
