Protection that helps keep children healthy and prevents serious liver complications
Hepatitis A is a virus that affects the liver and can cause sudden illness. It spreads through contact with the feces of an infected person—for example, during diaper changes—or through contaminated food or water. Many people who are infected may not show any signs or symptoms, but they can still spread the virus to others.
In some cases, hepatitis A may cause yellowing of the skin and eyes, stomach pain, vomiting, and, rarely, complications involving the liver, kidneys, pancreas, or blood. While most people recover fully, hepatitis A can be serious, especially for young children or individuals with other health concerns.
At Marshfield Clinic, our Family Medicine and Pediatric providers help families stay on schedule with routine vaccines that protect against hepatitis A and other preventable illnesses.
