A proven way to protect children and communities from serious illness
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It often begins with cold like symptoms and can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.
At Marshfield Clinic, our Family Medicine, Pediatric, Internal Medicine providers include measles vaccination as part of routine preventive care. We review immunization history, answer questions, and help ensure patients stay protected at every stage of life.

Symptoms
Measles symptoms often develop several days after exposure and may include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red or watery eyes
- A rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Complications
While measles can be mild for some, it can cause serious health problems, including:
- Ear infections

Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of these complications.
Who’s at risk?
Measles can affect anyone, but severe illness is more likely in:
- Unvaccinated children
- Pregnant individuals

Protecting yourself also helps protect those who cannot be vaccinated.
Vaccine recommendations
The measles vaccine is given as part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
- Children: Two doses starting at age 1
- Adults: Catchup vaccination if they were not vaccinated earlier or are unsure of their immunity
Your provider can help determine the right schedule based on age and health history.
