Pneumococcal Disease (Pneumonia)

A proven way to protect children and older adults from serious lung infections

Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria that spread through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with respiratory secretions. It can cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and infections of the brain—all of which can be life threatening.

Even when treated early with antibiotics, pneumococcal infections can lead to lung scarring or long-term health problems. Because some strains have developed resistance to certain antibiotics, prevention through vaccination is especially important.

At Marshfield Clinic, our Pediatric, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine providers offer pneumococcal vaccination as part of routine preventive care for infants, older adults, and people at increased risk.
